After weeks of economic chess moves and tariff hikes, the U.S. and China have finally agreed to a 90-day truce—and the markets wasted no time celebrating.

The deal, struck during in-person talks in Geneva this weekend, will significantly cut tariffs on both sides:
✅ U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports will drop from 145% to 30%
✅ China’s tariffs on U.S. goods will fall from 125% to 10%

Wall Street loved the news. Early Monday trading saw major indices surge, as investors breathed a little easier and bets on a near-term recession cooled off—for now.

This truce comes after a chaotic stretch that started with Trump’s surprise “Liberation Day” announcement last month—an 84% tariff slapped on Chinese imports overnight. That ballooned to 125% within a day, then hit 145% after another round of threats and counter-threats.

For consumers, this meant rising prices at checkout, slower shipping, and a general feeling that global trade stability was hanging by a thread.

Now? There’s breathing room—but it’s temporary.

Here’s How This Impacts You

🛒 Prices Could (Slowly) Ease
With lower tariffs on goods flowing both ways, retailers and suppliers may be able to lower some of the steep price hikes we’ve seen on electronics, apparel, appliances, and household goods. But don’t expect instant savings—many companies will wait to see if the truce holds before making big pricing moves.

💼 Stock Market Stability (for Now)
If you’ve got a 401(k), investments, or even just a small business loan dependent on market health, this truce could buy some time. Markets love predictability, and today’s rally shows how hungry investors are for any signs of economic cooling.

🚚 Supply Chains Might Loosen Up
Businesses battered by shipping costs, supplier shortages, and inventory delays could see some relief. That means more products on shelves and faster shipping—especially headed into summer retail seasons.

Why It’s Still Not Over

This is a 90-day pause—not a permanent deal.
That’s just long enough to calm markets short-term, but not long enough to erase structural risks. If talks fall apart (again), tariffs could shoot back up and restart the pressure cycle.

Also, the “new” 30% U.S. tariff still includes a 20% penalty related to fentanyl trafficking concerns and a 10% blanket tariff on all imports. So while it’s lower than before, trade friction isn’t disappearing.

For now, the worst-case scenario is off the table—and that’s a win for your wallet, your investments, and your day-to-day budget.

But don’t get too comfortable.
Smart money moves right now look like:

  • Holding off on big luxury purchases (until prices settle)

  • Watching markets, but staying cautious

  • Staying diversified if you’re investing

Big shifts are still happening behind the scenes—and the next 90 days will tell us whether this was a real step forward, or just a pause before the next round of drama.
