PayPal is teaming up with OpenAI to make buying through ChatGPT as seamless as chatting — a move that could redefine how consumers shop with artificial intelligence.
The payments giant confirmed an exclusive integration of its digital wallet directly into ChatGPT, allowing users to pay for products inside the app. Shares of PayPal rose 4% on the announcement.
Starting in 2026, both consumers and merchants in PayPal’s ecosystem will be able to transact within ChatGPT, according to CEO Alex Chriss.
“Hundreds of millions of PayPal wallet holders will soon be able to click ‘Buy with PayPal’ on ChatGPT and complete a safe, secure checkout,” Chriss told CNBC.
That means ChatGPT users will be able to discover and buy items directly within conversations, while PayPal merchants can sell through the platform without separate OpenAI accounts.
The partnership strengthens OpenAI’s push into AI-driven commerce, following recent collaborations with Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart, and signals how chatbots are evolving into digital personal shoppers for hundreds of millions of users each week.

For PayPal, the partnership reflects a larger ambition: to become the payment infrastructure of the AI economy.
The company has also partnered with Google and AI search startup Perplexity, extending its network across emerging intelligent platforms.
Chriss said PayPal will manage merchant routing, fraud prevention, and buyer verification for transactions made through ChatGPT. Users will continue to have access to buyer protections, package tracking, and dispute resolution.
“It’s not just that a transaction can happen — it’s that it happens inside the world’s most trusted merchant and consumer network,” Chriss said.
The integration sets up a new front in the digital wallet race. OpenAI already partners with Stripe for its Instant Checkout feature, which lets users pay via stored cards and bank accounts.
However, unlike PayPal, Stripe doesn’t hold balances or offer a consumer app — giving PayPal an edge as e-commerce evolves toward AI-assisted shopping, where users rely on conversational agents to recommend, compare, and complete purchases.
The PayPal–OpenAI partnership signals a pivotal shift in how consumers will transact in the age of AI. As chatbots become trusted shopping companions, secure payment systems will determine who wins the next wave of e-commerce innovation.
PayPal’s bet is simple: in the AI economy, trust and usability will be just as valuable as technology itself.
